Workplace Vibes

Updated: Dec 15

Hey Boss! What's the vibe like in your workspace?

While scrolling through my media feed recently, I stumbled upon a post that said, “If you won a trip to Hawaii but had to take your previous boss to go, would you accept it?”

I came across this post because a former colleague, who I had the opportunity to lead, tagged me and expressed their enthusiasm about joining me on that hypothetical journey. It was such an amazing compliment. I remain humbled and deeply grateful.

As I continued reading and went through some of the comments, I noticed countless "likes" for a person who mentioned they would prefer staying home to perform manual labor rather than going on that trip with the former leader. It wasn't really shocking, though. Many of us have found ourselves in the "I hate my job" pit of despair at one time or another. I know I have!

I envision the workplace as a company ocean. Each person is in their own energetic rowboat, steering through the waves, currents, and tides, while also creating personal ripples and disruptions as we strive to reach our specific goals.

In a challenging and frequently stressful setting, where people have personal or departmental objectives to meet, tensions can arise among colleagues. Management teams that consistently demonstrate respect, patience, and gratitude towards their employees will find these traits mirrored back and shared among team members. I have personally experienced this by leading in such a way. It is both effective and impressive to witness.

Improving the workplace environment, or raising the vibe, is most successful when started by executives or managers. Team members who feel their contributions are valued and essential tend to engage in their work with excellence, joy, and purpose. Clients, vendors, and guests can perceive the positive effect of a team supported by its management. Generally, satisfied clients result in satisfied shareholders.
